China's SenseTime, Honda to develop smart AI self-driving cars

ABR Staff Writer Published 11 December 2017

China-based artificial intelligence (AI) firm SenseTime has collaborated with Japanese car manufacturer Honda to develop smart AI cars with autonomous driving.

The companies will integrate Honda’s vehicle control system with SenseTime’s AI algorithms to develop an autonomous driving solution.

Both firms will also work together for the development of robot technology.

Based on computer vision technologies, the autonomous driving solutions will be used in the absence of high-resolution maps to cover a range of driving conditions.

The solution will help to use the self-driving function when a vehicle is driving without a detailed map.

SenseTime Japan CEO Lao Shihong said: “Safety is the number one priority when it comes to driving, and it also constitutes the core of our autonomous driving solution.

“By combining SenseTime’s strengths in computer vision technologies with Honda’s superior vehicle control technologies, we will together enable a safe and pleasant autonomous driving experience. Moreover, the fact that SenseTime provides core technology to a global enterprise like Honda marks a milestone.”

In June this year, Honda unveiled plans to launch Level 4 automated driving capability into its vehicles by 2025.

The decision is line with the company’s plans to introduce automated freeway driving capability (SAE Level 3) into Honda and Acura vehicles by 2020.

Level 4 is said to be highly automated, where the automated driving system can control the vehicle under certain given driving conditions, even when the human driver does not respond, or is not ready to take any action.

SenseTime, which has core technologies and patents for autonomous driving, also produces chips and embedded systems for smart AI cars.
